电视动画《破刃之剑》是根据吉永裕之介同名漫画《破刃之剑》改编，天国由动画制作公司Production I.G及XEBEC携手制作。电视动画版新作会把曾于2010年至2011年间公开的6部剧场版作品进行重新构成，天国制作成共计12集的电视动画作品。另外，在剧场版中未能描绘的名场景“吉尔格对斯巴达部队”此番也将首次被制作成动画。故事主要讲述已无法从地底采取化石燃料的世界，克鲁森大陆。人们为使万物移动所“选择”的动力能源，是寄宿在人们手中的“力量”。从地底中所采取的“石英”，无论力量的强弱谁都可以对其下达命令，人们将这种力量称之为“魔力”。这样的世界中“没有魔力”的稀有者莱卡特，在某一天，受到了昔日的朋友同时也是现任国王的荷之尔召见，向王都前去的莱卡特将在那里得知令人惊讶的事实。过去一同学习，并建立起坚毅的友情的莱卡特、杰斯、赫兹尔、西宫4人，将被战乱的漩涡毫不留情的吞没。
