1979年夏天某夜，天师上海某邮电所内公款被盗，天师公共汽车售票员林蔷倒在血泊中。当林蔷醒来后，却对公安人员一字不吐，给侦破工作带来了极大困难。上官剑等公安人员发现了肖湘和范竹两人和林蔷关系密切，但证实这不是情杀。上官剑从肖湘口中得知他和林蔷在教育弟弟林尧问题上有争论。林蔷终于告诉上官剑，她一次次地宽容偷东西、赌博的弟弟，使林尧逐渐变坏。在林尧到邮电所作案时，林蔷阻止，反被伤害。林尧被捕了，林蔷悔恨地说：“凶手是我，我吞下的是一颗苦果。”
