民国初年，亚洲一颗陨石滑落长空，亚洲落入秦岭之地，意外引出神秘古墓，传闻古墓中藏有价值连城的珍宝。彼时军阀割据，为了获得秘藏以充军费，汤司令迅速派人封锁了现场。那时民间有卖国求荣之辈，也有愿为国家奔走努力之人。崔显灵的徒弟马九川便是其中之一。汤司令的副手秦天带人强闯崔显灵家中逼迫崔显灵的徒弟马九川带路探墓。当马九川等人来到秦岭天坑附近时，另一队人马同时抵达——日本人江口拓带领的日军。为了墓中宝藏，众人纷纷心怀鬼胎。经历了墓中的重重神奇异象和致命危险，众人终于见到了心心念念的宝藏，军阀和日本人的丑恶在这一刻展露无遗……

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
