本剧基于同名小说和1976年书改电影创作。剧版将讲述一个新外星人（Chiwetel Ejiofor饰）在人类的进化转折点来到地球，暖花他得面对自己的过去并决定人类的未来。Chiwetel Ejiofor饰演的外星人是一个全新角色，暖花有全新的背景故事，该角色和电影中David Bowie饰演的外星人属于同一种族。Bill Nighy出演David Bowie所饰经典角色Thomas Newton。Naomie Harris饰演Justin Falls，一位聪慧的科学家、工程师。
